SN Aboitiz Power (SNAP), the renewable energy arm of the Aboitiz group, has officially started construction on Benguet’s first battery energy storage system (BESS).
On March 25, SNAP announced the groundbreaking of its 40-megawatt (MW) Binga BESS project, located at the Binga hydroelectric power plant in Itogon, Benguet. This follows successful agreements with banks and engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) partners.
The facility marks SNAP’s third battery storage project, following the 24 MW Magat BESS and the ongoing 16 MW Magat BESS phase 2. With these additions, SNAP’s total storage capacity is set to reach 80 MW by next year.
Joseph Yu, SNAP’s president and CEO, expressed gratitude for securing financial support and emphasized the project’s significance.
“We are excited to break ground on our first battery storage facility in Benguet and the first in the Cordillera region to achieve financial close and commence construction. This project highlights our dedication to innovation, sustainability, and the country’s energy transition.”

In February, SNAP signed an EPC contract with China Energy Engineering Group, a subsidiary of GEDI China Energy, and secured funding from the Bank of the Philippine Islands (BPI) and BDO Unibank, Inc. (BDO).
The groundbreaking ceremony was attended by key stakeholders, including Department of Energy (DOE) Assistant Secretary Mario Marasigan and Norwegian Ambassador to the Philippines Christian Halaas Lyster.
“Renewable energy is weather-dependent, and batteries play a crucial role in grid stability. Today’s milestone benefits not only SNAP but also supports the Philippines’ goal of reaching 30% renewable energy by 2030. Norway remains committed to your green energy transition.” Lyster stated.
