Libattion, a fast-growing company for large-scale stationary storage systems made from used and overproduced electric vehicle batteries, is opening Europe’s largest upcycling battery production facility in Biberist near Zurich, Switzerland.
The new production facility is designed for an annual capacity of 500 MWh by 2026, with the possibility of scaling up to 1 GWh later. By expanding production, Libattion aims to reduce dependence on raw material imports, strengthen Europe’s energy security through local production, and meet the growing demand for energy storage.
The new 7,000 square meter production facility relies on a high degree of automation, enabling high scalability of the battery storage systems. A clear growth trend is already evident. 7 MWh were generated in 2022, 12 MWh in 2023, and 27 MWh in 2024. The storage systems are modular and cover capacities from 97 kWh to 60 MWh. Production is located on the same site as the Swiss battery recycling company Librec, enabling regional synergies in the supply and value chain.
“The demand for energy storage solutions is constantly growing, and the reuse of electric car batteries as stationary energy storage devices opens up enormous potential for the European storage market,” explains Stefan Bahamonde, CEO and Co-Founder.
“Our new production hall enables us to respond flexibly to market requirements and, in doing so, make an important contribution to resource conservation in Europe. By automating our production, we can operate not only efficiently but also economically and precisely adapt our capacities to demand.”
A special focus is placed on safety: Each battery undergoes a comprehensive testing process. Multi-layered safety systems and continuous monitoring throughout its entire service life ensure reliable and safe operation. “Safety is our top priority – thanks to automated production and strict quality controls, we can guarantee the highest safety standards for every storage device,” says Bahamonde.
With the opening of the production facility in Biberist, Libattion aims to contribute to strengthening European battery production and energy security. Establishing the facility on the same site as Librec strengthens Biberist as a business location and establishes a regional center of excellence for battery technology.
Increasing demand for energy storage offers sustainable growth prospects and secures the location in international competition.
