Rajasthan-based EPC firm Indexel Engineering has formed a strategic alliance with US battery innovator UNIGRID to bring 50 MWh of sodium-ion battery storage systems to India. This initiative marks one of the early efforts to introduce sodium-ion energy storage at scale in the country.
The imported battery units will begin arriving in the second half of 2025 and will be deployed across key western Indian states, including Rajasthan, Gujarat, and Maharashtra. These systems are expected to support large-scale industrial applications as well as decentralised and microgrid projects, aiming to address both grid stability and renewable integration challenges.
Sodium-ion batteries from UNIGRID are uniquely suited to India’s climatic extremes, operating efficiently between -40°C and 60°C and offering enhanced safety through their non-flammable design. Additionally, they use more abundant materials, helping reduce reliance on imported critical minerals.
Darren H. S. Tan, Co-Founder and CEO of UNIGRID, emphasized the region’s potential:
“India represents a particularly dynamic market for alternative storage technologies.”
He added that the collaboration will allow UNIGRID to expand its presence while meeting the region’s fast-growing energy demands.
The first installations will be targeted at strategic industrial areas to enhance energy reliability and infrastructure resilience. Reflecting on the potential impact, Anushka Singhal, Energy Division Lead at Indexel, noted:
“The solution would help the company pursue a vision of more resilient energy systems, aligned with the operational needs of industrial zones and remote communities.”
