Adani Green Energy Limited (AGEL), one of India’s leading renewable energy companies, has signed a long-term power purchase agreement (PPA) with Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation Limited (UPPCL) to deliver 1,250 megawatts (MW) of energy storage capacity through a pumped hydro storage project (PSP). The agreement was executed via AGEL’s wholly-owned subsidiary, Adani Hydro Energy Five Limited.
The supply will originate from the Panaura pumped storage project, located in the Sonbhadra district of Uttar Pradesh. This strategic deal marks a significant advancement in the state’s efforts to integrate large-scale energy storage into its grid and manage renewable energy intermittency.
Awarded to AGEL by UPPCL in February 2025, the Panaura PSP comes with a minimum commitment period of 40 years. The project is expected to be completed within the next six years and is poised to support Uttar Pradesh’s growing electricity demand with clean and reliable energy.
The Panaura project is part of AGEL’s broader ambition to scale its total hydro pumped storage capacity to over 5,000 MW by 2030. The company is already advancing construction on several PSPs across India, including:
- A 500 MW project at the Chitravathi River in Andhra Pradesh
- A 1,500 MW project at Tarali in Maharashtra
- A 1,800 MW project at Gandikota, also in Andhra Pradesh
AGEL’s growing portfolio of pumped hydro projects signifies its commitment to building a sustainable and resilient energy infrastructure for India. These projects not only ensure round-the-clock renewable power but also offer vital grid-balancing capabilities.
